چکیده

Mean and turbulent flow characteristics together with particle concentrations were measured in a busy urban street canyon in Essen, Germany, at five (flow characteristics) and three heights (particles) above ground, respectively. Particle mass and number concentrations were sampled in the size range 0.3oDpo10 mm. The flow characteristics within the canyon were significantly influenced by canyon geometry and were shown to have significant impact on particle concentrations. During flow being directed perpendicular to the canyon a vortex circulation leads to a doubling of ambient particles when the measurement site is situated upwind to ambient flow. The vertical profiles of fine particles have maximum vertical differences of 12% between measurement levels. In the upper part of the canyon, concentrations decrease due to enhanced turbulence and mixing. Significant differences in the dynamics of particle number concentration for different size ranges are analysed. While submicron particles are inversely related to turbulence parameters, i.e. lower concentrations during enhanced turbulence, coarser particles (1oDpo10 mm) are positively correlated to mixing within the canyon. r 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Numerical Simulation of Ultrafine Particle Dispersion in Urban Street Canyons with the Spalart-Allmaras Turbulence Model

The increased traffic emissions and reduced ventilation of urban street canyons lead to the formation of high particle concentrations as a function of the related flow field and geometry. In this context, the use of advanced modelling tools, able to evaluate particle concentration under different traffic and meteorological conditions, may be helpful. In this work, a numerical scheme based on th...

MEASUREMENT AND DISPERSION BEHAVIOUR OF PARTICLES IN VARIOUS SIZE (5 nm>Dp<1000 nm) RANGES IN A CAMBRIDGE STREET CANYON

INTRODUCTION Current regulations for atmospheric particulate matter include PM10 and PM2.5 mass concentration. Fine particulates (those below 1000 nm) are not included in the regulatory limits. These particles contribute significantly to particle number concentration (PNC), but little to particle mass concentration. It is widely hypothesised that number concentrations of fine particles are bett...

Wind tunnel measurements of pollutant turbulent fluxes in urban intersections

Wind tunnel experiments have been carried out at the EnFlo laboratory to measure mean and turbulent tracer fluxes in geometries of real street canyon intersections. The work was part of the major DAPPLE project, focussing on the area surrounding the intersection between Marylebone Road and Gloucester Place in Central London, UK. Understanding flow and dispersion in urban streets is a very impor...

Concentration and flow distributions in urban street canyons: wind tunnel and computational data

The goal of this paper is to present bluff body flow and transport from steady point sources of pollutants, or chemical and biological agents in an idealized urban environment This paper includes ventilation behavior in different street canyon configurations. To evaluate dispersion in a model urban street canyon, a series of tests with various street canyon aspect ratios (B=H) are presented. Bo...

Wind-field and Pollution-dispersion Simulation in a Street Canyon in Helsinki with Adrea-hf Code

ADREA-HF, which is a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code, is utilised in order to numerically study the flow and concentration fields within a street-canyon area. The selected site is Runeberg Str., a typical urban street canyon with an aspect ratio of approximately 1:1 in Helsinki, Finland. The ADREA-HF model is a transient, non-hydrostatic, dense transport code, especially developed for d...
